Marginalia — Privacy Policy
Marginalia is a Chrome extension for taking Markdown notes in the side panel while reading a PDF. This policy explains what data the extension handles.
Summary
Marginalia does not collect, transmit, sell or share your data. It has no server, no user accounts, no analytics and no advertising. Everything it handles stays in your browser.
Data stored in your browser
- Your notes. The text you write is saved with
chrome.storage.localon your device. Each set of notes is stored under an identifier that PDF.js derives from the PDF file itself, so that the same notes can be shown when you open that PDF again. The PDF's address, file name and contents are not stored. - Your settings. Shortcuts, export file name, language, theme and similar options are saved with
chrome.storage.sync. If you have turned on sync in Chrome, Google syncs these settings between your own devices under your Google account. The developer has no access to them.
Data used only while the extension is running
- The address of the active tab is read to decide whether the tab shows a PDF. It is not stored and not sent anywhere.
- The PDF you open is downloaded from the address you opened it at and displayed by the PDF.js viewer included in the extension. This request goes only to the server that hosts the PDF. The file is processed on your device and is not sent anywhere else.
Things you do yourself
- Export and import. When you export, a Markdown file is saved to your computer. When you import, a file you choose is read. Both happen on your device.
- Copy button. Clicking the copy button of a code block places that code on your clipboard.
Sharing
No data is sold, transferred to third parties, or used for purposes unrelated to taking notes. The extension loads no remote code and contacts no third-party services.
Deleting your data
Clearing a note removes it from storage. Removing the extension from Chrome deletes all notes and settings it stored. Export your notes first if you want to keep them.
Changes
If the extension starts handling data differently, this page will be updated before or together with that version, and the date above will change.
Marginalia —
chrome.storage.localで端末内に保存します。
chrome.storage.syncで保存します。
